The Desire To Create - A Collection Of Thoughts

Around this time last year I was questioning my desire to create. I've come to realize that what fuels me to take an idea and form it into something tangible isn't just a desire, but a need to express myself and the soul within.

That is why handmade items are so special. Each piece is forged with so much thought, love, care, and passion. Those who possess a handmade good should feel a stronger connection to it, as they are carrying a small piece of its maker.

But a year ago, I wondered what drives other artisans to do what they do. So I decided to ask them in an Etsy forum, and some of the responses were absolutely beautiful.

"I always figured the drive to make things was as natural to a human brain as the desire to find food or a comfy bed. I always sort of considered it innate and instinctual, though people follow it to different degrees. Studies seem to indicate that music pre-dates speech on the evolutionary scale and that the desire to make music is an ingrained part of our biology; and I figure art and creativity is much the same. Even if things are made with practicality in mind, there's definitely a lot to be said for the sheer fun of doing it." - Danielle V, Two-Hoof Creations

"I find satisfaction in molding a particular thought into a purposed, beautiful function. A board is just an article of wood, unless one allows a dream to come alive. I love the feeling of creating something that causes me to be thankful of God given talent. I enjoy the thought, remarkable reactions will bring joy to someone, someday, as each of my pieces are treasured for gifts. I believe, in every artist, there is a longing to take the ordinary and transform it into a masterpiece of uniqueness and style." - Phillip G, The Grain Expression

"I must say I create for the same reason I breathe.....to stay alive." - Ryan M, Image Fever

"Being creative is something I've been drawn to since I was very young. My dad recognized my desire to be creative and worked hard to foster that. For me, I really like how a creative idea can form into a palpable thing. On the other hand, I also love being able to create not so tangible things in the form of graphic and web design. Creativity is endless." Amanda M, Designs by Amanda Marie

"I create Gourmet candy, jewelry and all kinds of crafts. I have done this as long as I can remember and I have such a passion for what I do. I feel very relaxed and happy while I create and when I am done I feel so good when i see my done creations, and then i want to start all over again and make more. I have a hard time believing that I would be able to live a happy life if I couldn't create when I want to and whatever I want to make..." - Pennie, Pernilla's Something Swedish .
