I have been making jewelry for about 6 years now, but it's only been a year since I've displayed my work to the world. Surprisingly, I found the artisan community to be my strongest support. We help and inspire one another, and this is why I wanted to share my top 4 favorite bead shops to visit in NYC.
This area is fairly easy to get to as so many trains stop there. Get on the subway and take the Q, F, N, D, B, M, or R train towards 34th St. Herald Square. Though it is an extremely busy area during work hours, the weekends are filled with tourists. Don't be surprised if you hear at least 5 different languages spoken within the hour. It's amazing.
Herald Square has also been turned into a lovely park area to sit, sip some coffee and chat with friends. When the weather is nice, I tend to bring along my tools and make jewelry after purchasing the beads I needed.
Beads Center is usually my first stop. They have a large selection of beads, findings, tools and some unique items that you can't find everywhere. Don't be afraid to ask questions if you're unsure about something. I can spend hours in there. My boyfriend can attest to that.
There are also genetic beauties you might find at other stores. If you're short on time or patience, get the Swarovski Crystals. However if you have plenty of time, shop online for those necessities. I'll be writing an upcoming blog for my favorite online shops as well. Either way, be prepared to walk out with a small bag after spending a nice chunk of your money. Just remember, if it makes you happy, it's worth it.
Another shop I like to visit is Beads World. Both shops have great variety, some similar and some different items. Prices and quantities are different, for example, Beads Center only allows purchases of 12 Swarovski Crystals at a time, while Beads World charges a bit more but for any amount you desire. Beads World is currently having a moving sale, some items up to 70% off, so definitely stop in soon. Their new shop will be located at W. 38th St and 6th Ave. There are also a few other bead and craft shops, so be sure to walk up and down Broadway and 6th Ave.
Be sure to grab a waffle with nutella on your way out. You can thank me later.
One of the vendors at Hester Street Fair told me about Leekan Designs. (This is why I enjoy talking to people I feel I can learn something from.) Newly discovered, but it has become one of my favorites. The owners are quite nice and approachable, something I value in this large city. If you're a gemstone junkie, this is the place for you!
They're working on building jewelry making supplies and findings, but their raw and polished gemstone collections are gorgeous. If you're taking someone with you, don't worry. Leekan Designs carries home furnishings, unique gifts, ethnic pieces from all parts of Asia and more.
The quaint little Brooklyn Bead Box is nestled in the lovely Carroll Gardens neighborhood. This shop always carries some neat and unique trinkets from all over the world. If you're new to jewelry making or want to develop your skills, join in on one of their many instructional classes. Also, be sure to enter your work into one of their monthly contest. They'll even hold private parties and close down the store upon request.
