Jewelry Making + Mimosa Night at Le Petit Cafe

Last night I held a jewelry making class at the quaint and enchanting Le Petit Cafe in Carroll Gardens. The class includes 2 hours of instruction on basic wire work techniques, all tools and supplies along with filigree, flower cabochons and swarovski crystals to create these dainty and elegant Victorian inspired earrings. Also, the first mimosa is on me!

Thanks so much to Alexa and Kayla for coming out! I was so proud of their designs. Being able to teach about something you truly love on top of seeing others enjoy themselves is an incredibly gratifying feeling.

Here is the version of my little creation as I guided them step by step.

Le Petit Cafe definitely knows how to create a serene atmosphere. You can feel it as soon as you arrive when you're greeted with warm smiles. The lighting was dim with candles surrounding. We were able to choose to sit at a little nook in the back of the restaurant but were never forgotten by the staff. When I travel, I love visiting all of the unique restaurants just for their decor. Who knew this little gem was right here in Brooklyn!

The Desire To Create - A Collection Of Thoughts

Around this time last year I was questioning my desire to create. I've come to realize that what fuels me to take an idea and form it into something tangible isn't just a desire, but a need to express myself and the soul within.

That is why handmade items are so special. Each piece is forged with so much thought, love, care, and passion. Those who possess a handmade good should feel a stronger connection to it, as they are carrying a small piece of its maker.

But a year ago, I wondered what drives other artisans to do what they do. So I decided to ask them in an Etsy forum, and some of the responses were absolutely beautiful.

"I always figured the drive to make things was as natural to a human brain as the desire to find food or a comfy bed. I always sort of considered it innate and instinctual, though people follow it to different degrees. Studies seem to indicate that music pre-dates speech on the evolutionary scale and that the desire to make music is an ingrained part of our biology; and I figure art and creativity is much the same. Even if things are made with practicality in mind, there's definitely a lot to be said for the sheer fun of doing it." - Danielle V, Two-Hoof Creations

"I find satisfaction in molding a particular thought into a purposed, beautiful function. A board is just an article of wood, unless one allows a dream to come alive. I love the feeling of creating something that causes me to be thankful of God given talent. I enjoy the thought, remarkable reactions will bring joy to someone, someday, as each of my pieces are treasured for gifts. I believe, in every artist, there is a longing to take the ordinary and transform it into a masterpiece of uniqueness and style." - Phillip G, The Grain Expression

"I must say I create for the same reason I breathe.....to stay alive." - Ryan M, Image Fever

"Being creative is something I've been drawn to since I was very young. My dad recognized my desire to be creative and worked hard to foster that. For me, I really like how a creative idea can form into a palpable thing. On the other hand, I also love being able to create not so tangible things in the form of graphic and web design. Creativity is endless." Amanda M, Designs by Amanda Marie

"I create Gourmet candy, jewelry and all kinds of crafts. I have done this as long as I can remember and I have such a passion for what I do. I feel very relaxed and happy while I create and when I am done I feel so good when i see my done creations, and then i want to start all over again and make more. I have a hard time believing that I would be able to live a happy life if I couldn't create when I want to and whatever I want to make..." - Pennie, Pernilla's Something Swedish .

A Collection Of Kind Words

This morning I find myself sipping on my warm coffee and lounding on an overly comfortable couch in the Pocono Mountains. I'm listening to the silence, breathing the fresh, cool air, and building the peace back within me. As humans, we always strive to find a balance in our lives, and within ourselves. Sometimes, with just a bit of quiet time and meditation, the voice within us speaks. It tells us who we are and what we need. My passions bring that voice to life. Each time I feel I have reached a new milestone in my work, I seek its guidance once more. So I'm reflecting on where I was, and where I truly want to go.

There have been so many incredibly thoughtful and kind words said about my designs. Here is just a humble collection of them. To everyone who isn't mentioned, know your words are with me every step of the way.

Avalise - Beautiful Handmade Jewelry by Caroline Mernin

Since I've started my instagram page, Caroline Mernin from Avalise Jewelry has been a total inspiration. Her generous and kind words about my work has pushed me to move forward in my own jewelry designs. Caroline creates gorgeous antique and modern style jewelry. Each creation is one of a kind and many are repurposed from fine vintage silverware, each intricately detailed, giving them their own character. On top of that, she has awesome hand stamping skills for custom requests!

( A photo of Caroline and her younger daughter. Both truly beautiful inside and out. )

Here is what came in the mail for me!

A complete surprise, I found this hair accessory with "Caroline" engraved on the back as well as a hand written letter. Thank you for this sweet gift!

A stainless steel pendant with gold ion plating handstamped with "create the life you love" and a tree of life charm.

I'm absolutely in love. It's truly a great feeling to receive something handmade with love, just for you.

Caroline also sent me this spoon ring in the mail last May. I was so incredibly touched and humbled by this surprise.  I love layering it with my own creation, my first silver smith sterling silver hammered and oxidized ring.

For Coffee House Addicts Only

As I sat in my consumer behavior class, I realized I am not only addicted to coffee, but to coffee houses as well. When I'm driving, commuting on the train, in class or making my handmade jewelry, there is almost always a coffee cup sitting beside me. But there's something about the atmosphere of a coffee house that gives me this sense of peace. Every detail of a cafe is intricately designed to cater to those who just want to relax and lose themselves for a short while. From the community boards and the handwritten menus on the wall to the fresh baked goods and coffee aroma, the design and layout of the furniture and decor, to the low buzzing of the people. All these things add a subtle touch to the atmosphere that I always gravitate to while travelling. Because no matter where I may be in the world, a kind face behind the counter makes me feel right at home.

Whether we're chatting it up with a friend, doing some work on our laptops or simply stop in to sip on a latte and unwind, Brunswick Cafe definitely hits the nail on the head when it comes to setting the perfect atmosphere for their target niche.

"Each staff member is trained by Counter Culture Coffee so no matter who is behind the machine you will be getting some great coffee!"

I recently paid a visit to Brunswick Cafe after teaching a jewelry class to their very own executive chef, Cynthia. The extra perk about this place is that the don't only have baked goods, but fresh organic produce and a menu filled with delicious breakfast food, sandwiches, and salads. I had the chicken salad sandwich, but you can take a look for yourself

When I asked Cynthia why she became a chef, she said it was because "I love stuffing face," so you know it's going to be good! Stop in soon for new Fall menu items like house chili with corn bread and fried egg, roasted root vegetables tossed in chili oil, and sweet and sour BLT sandwich.

Q&A With The Lovely Aida From Trinkets For D

I am so humbled that Aida, designer of Trinkets for D, has taken time out of her busy schedule to share some experience and words of wisdom with me! I'm so thankful for the relationships I have created in the artisan community, and so I would like to pass this along to the rest of you.

After meeting Aida via Instagram, I was inspired to venture out into the world of fairs, trade shows, and the like, after growing Carolina Karoleva Designs. Here are a few questions I had asked Aida in hopes of enlightening me for my path to future growth.

➳ ➳

What made you decide to turn your love of jewelry making into a business?

A few years back, my family was facing a huge, financial commitment with my youngest son's autism diagnosis (he is the D in Trinkets for D).  I was working full time then and my husband was practically stay-at-home in order to drive him to all of his therapies and doctor appts.  My full time job at the time had a better health insurance benefit.  We weren't able to make the bills, so I decided to come up with something that I could learn on my own, and generate some added income.  I am a creative person, so I knew that creating something would also benefit me emotionally and psychologically through this time.  I chose jewelry because fashion and jewelry design was always a dream of mine.  The 'our story' tab on my website, chronicles our families personal journey.

How do you distinguish your brand from all of the competition? Do you have any key strategies on building awareness and  a loyal customer base? Who is your target niche?

Its been a work in progress for sure.  As an artist, with time you develop a personal style.  I think in the begining you try a little bit of everything, but the pieces that show your true self are the ones that make a stronger connection with people.  I had a customer once tell me that as she stood in front of my table and looked at my work, she could see who I was.  That really moved me.  And I decided at that point to stick mostly to the style that I am passionate about.  My pieces I find are bold, personal and definitely bohemian.  I tend to go for Buddhist pieces, Gypsy and Native influences as well.  There is an underlying spirituality in everything I do.  My target niche… I would say earthy, bohemian, artsy folks mostly - young and old, men and women.

Have you found more success setting up displays at fairs rather than building your followers online?

For me personally yes.  For whatever reason, I have been drawn to more and more fairs/bazaars/festivals.  I love the personal connection.  When I started, my goal was not this… I hoped to eventually become exclusively online.  I'm not sure that its better.  I now find myself in a place where I don't have time to keep my online store stocked because I'm balancing being home for my family, and constantly stocking back up for the next festival.  My ultimate goal is to find a middle ground.  I do sell some online based on requests that I get from people that see pieces that I post on instagram or Facebook.  I am thrilled to be able to sell to them this way.

Is there any advice you can give to artisans who are thinking of venturing into the world of festivals, expos and the like?

The first year is a learning process.  Don't let disappointing shows get you down.  There will be many shows that for one reason or other, you don't sell at.  Either the show was sold to you as a huge draw, and no one shows up… or, your vibe isn't exactly what those folks came looking for.  You will inevitably learn a lot from all these experiences.  You make connections with vendors and customers that will lead to success later on.

What's your favorite part about the face to face interaction with your customers?
What are some potential downsides to in person sales?

I loooooove the personal connection.  I don't usually tell people about my family's story up front.  I never want a 'pity sale', however whenever possible I share with them after purchase.  It usually gets them to open up and we make a lovely connection.  I also find sooooo much inspiration at shows.  I love artsy kids.  My soul sings when I'm around them, they inspire me more than anything.  Oh, divine youth.  The downside is definitely those people that want a bargain.  My prices are VERY reasonable.  I am not out to gauge anyone, simply to make a living.  But there are some people out there that regardless of how low something is priced, they still try to make a deal.  I always knock off a few bucks to people that buy more than 1 piece or are repeat customers.  But, I have had some uncomfortable situations with people that really want something for practically free and try to tell me that 'they can make it themselves'.  I think any artist has confronted that.

How do you manage your business and home life with your family between designing, shows and everything else?

Ha, ha, ha…. balance.  It's absolutely crazy.  I can't even tell you.  While my kids are in school, I try to dedicate 3 full days while they are there, to creating.  The other two week days go to home stuff, and shopping for materials for my work.  Of course, most weeks don't go according to plan and I end up doing late nights.  But, I am grateful.  A little over two years ago it became evident that the last piece of the puzzle to my son's well being was for me to be home, so I quit my full time job and my husband increased his hours at work.  This gives me the ability to put my children and family's needs first, while being able to contribute financially just enough to get by.  And… it simply makes me sooooo very happy to make my jewelry and go to these events.  I have met sooooo many beautiful people that have made a difference in my life.  I am grateful.

The Banana Man

As I mentioned in my Get Inspired section, from time to time I will write about those that have influenced me, my work, and even my life. One of my first supporters on Instagram was Stephan Brusche. (You can find him @isteef. Trust me, you'll want to after this post.) Somehow, I've managed to still keep him intrigued with my work. I'm always so thankful for continuous support.

"I started with Instagram to get in touch and reach more people outside of The Netherlands. And I did succeed there, since only 6% of my followers are living in The Netherlands."

I would say so, considering the 7,500+ followers! Although, The Netherlands sounds pretty amazing right about now.

So what attracted me to Stephan's artwork? For one thing, it was his kindness and generous gratitude towards each and every person that took time from their day to compliment his work. Follow him and you'll see what I mean.

The humor behind his work balances between sweet and corny to darkly hilarious. Working as a graphic designer, Stephan was struck by the idea to draw on his banana, and his creative art form developed.

I always believe that anything that evokes emotion can be considered an art. I'm always either smiling or laughing with every post of his.

You can find Stephan's wearable art on his Society6 page. I love my Viking Chick T-Shirt, but you can choose from hoodies, tote bags, pillow cases, IPhone gear, home accessories, even kids clothes! Also, he's currently got a promo going on for free shipping! Just click on the images and you're good to go!

I also got the Bunny The Krakenslayer tee, because... what can be cuter?

If you love custom made work, just reach out to him via his website! You can find his social media links, monster book club, animal skull alphabet art, and more.

Yep, I'm totally batman.
